Always start with "Why?"
Are you thinking about becoming an Entrepreneur?
Starting a business can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re unsure where to begin.
But here’s the key: don’t start with what you want to do or how you’ll do it. Start with why you want to do it.
Simon Sinek’s book Start with Why teaches us that businesses that succeed are built on a clear purpose. Your "why" is the reason you’ll keep going when things get tough, and it’s what will attract others, customers, partners, and your community—to believe in your mission.
Step 1: Start with "Why"
Ask yourself: Why do I want to start a business?
Your "why" should go deeper than just making money. It’s about the impact you want to have and the purpose behind your actions. For example:
Do you want to solve a problem you’ve experienced?
Are you passionate about helping a specific group of people?
Is there a story in your life that inspires your purpose?
Your "why" becomes the foundation of your business. It gives you clarity and motivates others to support your mission.
Step 2: Find Your "How"
Once you know your "why," the next step is figuring out how you’ll make your vision a reality. This is about the strategies and methods you’ll use to bring your purpose to life.
Think about your skills and strengths. How can they help others?
What experiences have shaped you that could guide your approach?
How will you create a solution to the problem you want to solve?
Your "how" is what makes your business unique. It’s the process that turns your purpose into actionable steps.
Step 3: Define Your "What"
Finally, decide what you will do. This is the tangible product, service, or experience your business will offer. Your "what" is the result of aligning your "why" and "how."
What can you offer that aligns with your purpose?
How will it solve a problem or fulfill a need for others?
What makes it valuable or different from other options?
By the time you define your "what," your business idea will already be rooted in purpose, strategy, and value.
Your Self-Prompt
Take a moment to reflect on these three questions:
Why do I want to start a business? (Think about the purpose that drives you.)
How can I use my skills and experiences to serve others?
What can I create or offer that fulfills my purpose and helps others?
Remember, the best businesses don’t just sell products, they solve problems with purpose. Start with your "why," and the rest will follow.
